Sofa Buying Guide for Modern Homes
Choose a sofa that fits your layout, lifestyle, fabric needs, and long-term comfort.

Plan the sofa around your layout
A sofa should support the way your living room works. A compact three-seater can suit an apartment or media room, while a sectional sofa works well in open-plan spaces where the seating also defines the lounge area.
Before buying, mark the sofa footprint on the floor with tape. This helps you check walking space, door clearance, coffee table distance, and how the sofa aligns with a TV unit or window.
Think about fabric and maintenance
Homes with children, guests, or daily lounging usually benefit from durable upholstery and removable cushions. Textured fabrics can hide light wear better than very smooth fabrics, while leather or faux leather can be easier to wipe down.
Color matters too. Beige, grey, taupe, cream, olive, and warm neutrals are flexible choices for modern interiors. Darker colors can feel dramatic, but they need enough natural or layered lighting to avoid making the room feel heavy.
Test comfort by seat depth and support
Deep seats are relaxed and lounge-friendly. Shallower seats feel more upright and formal. If your sofa will be used by guests of different heights, a balanced medium seat depth is often the safest choice.
Look for a frame and cushioning combination that feels supportive, not just soft. A good sofa should feel comfortable on day one and still hold its shape after regular use.
